Rhinoplasty - Nose Reshaping
Nose reshaping, known as Rhinoplasty, is one of the longest established and most commonly requested cosmetic procedure. It is popular with men and women of all ages. This operation alters the size and/or shape of the nose to create a new profile and bring it into proportion with the rest of the facial contours.
The shape and size of your nose is inherited from your parents. Your nose is generally fully developed by the time you’re 16.
Many people are unhappy with the size, shape and position of their nose, It is important for you to be happy with your nose as it is the central feature of the face, how your nose looks can determine the overall appearance of the face, whether this is because it is large and dominates the face, if it is crooked and makes you self conscious, or for any other reason.
Nose reshaping is for anyone who feels that their nose is out of proportion to other facial features, common problems include:
- A bump on the nose
- Particularly flared nostrils
- Previous injury to the nose making it bumpy or out of shape
- Nose appearing to large for the face- too wide or long
- The tip of the nose drooping
Nose reshaping surgery, is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed across the world, and as well as being requested for cosmetic reasons, it can also be used to correct breathing issues and to help alleviate the symptoms of sleep apnoea.
At the London Medical Clinic the surgeons can help make your nose smaller, more prominent, slimmer, wider or smooth away unwanted lumps or bumps and even alter the feature such as flared nostrils. By helping patients reduce the size or reshape their nose we can help build up a patient's self esteem and self confidence.
An operation to have your nose reshaped can change the size and shape from the tip to the bridge of your nose including the nostrils. This is why it’s very important to be sure about what you don’t like about your nose and what you want changed.
You may decide to have it changed for cosmetic reasons or to restore the shape of your nose after an injury.
It may be that this procedure has been considered because of feeling unhappy with the nose, or perhaps there is a problem that contributes to such difficulties such as breathing. Whatever the reason for wanting nose reshaping, these conditions can normally be improved with a simple surgical procedure.
After Rhinoplasty an individual can have hugely increased self- confidence and self-esteem. And in some cases, no more bullying or teasing from others. Individuals can also have the option of changing their hairstyle, so no longer hiding their face. It can positively improve their harmony of appearance and correct the asymmetry of your facial features.
Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anaesthetic and involves an overnight stay at the hospital. The operation takes about an hour, depending on the complexity of the procedure. It is carried out through incisions made inside the nose, which leave no visible scars. In some cases, where the width or flare of the nostrils is being reduced, small outside incisions are used. In these cases the incisions will be made where possible in natural crease lines of the nose to conceal scarring.
The procedure involves removing, shifting or altering the underlying bone and cartilaginous structure. If the nose has a prominent hump, bone and cartilage can be removed to reduce the size of the nose. If the nose is too wide it can be narrowed, or if it is bent to one side it can be straightened.
The modification of the nose could concern part or all of the elements of the infrastructure; the point of the nose, the nostrils, the bridge of the nose and the nasal septum. The modification of one of these elements can often lead to the change of another. When this occurs the entire visual perception of the nose is greatly improved with only a relatively minor adjustment.
There are variations on standard Rhinoplasty such as a Septo Rhinoplasty. This is when the internal bone (septum) is deviated; often leading to an obstruction to breathing and this can be corrected at the same time as altering the shape. If the nose has a bulbous tip and only cartilage needs removing there is a lesser procedure known as a Rhino Tip.
A good candidate for nose surgery can be anyone who is unhappy with their noses either from birth, injury or as a result of aging. If you are dissatisfied with your nose appearance, for example it is too large compared to other parts of your face, too wide when looking at it in a front view, there is a bump along the bridge of the nose, the nose is too small, crooked or too flat, you are having sinus or other breathing problems - then you are a potential candidate. Rhinoplasty patient often improve the overall harmony of their faces, as well as how the particular area looks like
