Breast Reduction

The way a woman feels about her breasts is very personal. Over-developed breasts may make some women appear out of shape and over-weight or limit their participation in certain activities and exercises. This often results in embarrassment or self consciousness.

It can be difficult to have to deal with constant attention focussed on the chest area and never being comfortable in a bra, tight top or even a social situation. Medically, oversized breasts or breasts that differ in size or shape from one another can cause a woman backache or skin rashes beneath the breasts. Breast reduction (Mammoplasty) surgery is more than a cosmetic procedure; it can make a woman feel comfortable, both medically and emotionally by improving the appearance of the breasts.

This type of surgery has been practiced for more than 40 years. Better results are now being achieved through new surgical techniques.

A reduction can also relieve the physical symptoms related to large, heavy, pendulous breasts and to relieve back, shoulder and neck pain, skin irritation and problems with clothing which are common in women with large, pendulous breasts, as well as for improvement in appearance. They may also make sports more enjoyable The long term results of the operation cannot be predicted in a specific patient, due to many factors unrelated to surgery, such as normal slackening of tissues, pregnancy, use of birth control pills, breast feeding and weight changes. This operation permits the patient to feel better about her figure, to more easily acquire properly fitting clothing and to be more comfortable while engaging in physical activity.

In breast reduction surgery, the surgeon removes excess skin, fat and breast tissue giving them a smaller and firmer appearance. In exchange for this improvement the patient must accept scarring on the lower part of the breasts.

The surgeon will aim to leave as little scar tissue on the skin as possible, however, any scar tissue that is created from the breast lift procedure is permanent. You should have a discussion in regards to scar placement with your surgeon prior to the operation so that your results meet your expectations.

The dangers of breast cancer are no greater after this type of breast surgery, and self examination of your breast post-operatively is still possible and important. Temporary or permanent changes in nipple sensation are reported by about 15% of women after having breast reduction surgery.

Women are not the only ones who suffer from this condition. In men enlargement of the male breast tissue, also known as gynecomastia, can be an equivalent source of discomfort and embarrassment. For men the breast reduction procedure is often performed using liposuction or Smartlipo Laser with suction.
